Our volunteers are trained and specially selected for duty in the areas of direct patient care, indirect patient and family support, pastoral care, and bereavement care. They also participate in advocacy, community outreach, and fundraising.

Through Hospice of Acadiana, our patients and families are able to take advantage of 200+ volunteers and the services they provide. Volunteers are able to choose from three categories depending on how they would like to volunteer. The categories include:

Direct Patient Care

Opportunities that deal directly with the patient in their home.

Indirect Patient Care

Allows you to provide care for a patient, but without direct patient contact.

Non-Patient Care Opportunities

Opportunities include no specific patient care, but instead, helping Hospice of Acadiana in general.

• Administrative Crew

  Volunteers perform possible task such as data entry, filing, document scanning, contacting other volunteers as needed and several other administrative type duties.

• Camp Brave Hearts

  This is a once a year, 2-day, day camp held for children, ages 6-11, who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Volunteers participate in the two day event in multiple different ways.

• Community Outreach

  Volunteers participate in varying events in the community to spread our mission and educate about hospice. An example of an event is "Visits with Veterans".

• Companion Crew

  For caregivers who may need a break or for patients who simply want to play cards, be read to, or just have a visitor.

• Crochet Crew

  Handmade crochet blankets are made to provide warmth and comfort for our patients. *All yarn supplied

• Daytime Delivery / Pickup Crew

  Volunteers deliver casseroles, flowers, supplies, etc. to patients in need.

• Event / Hospitality Crew

  This group of volunteers participates in the various events held by Hospice of Acadiana. (Gala, Bingo, Raffle Ticket Sales, etc.) Duties can include; organizing, preparation, set-up, event day duties, etc.

• Floral Arrangements

  We receive multiple shipments of fresh flowers from local stores. Volunteers arrange them into beautiful bouquets to be delivered to patients by employees and volunteers. * No previous experience needed, we'll teach you!

• Food with Love

  Nutritious, homemade meals available for patients and families both before and after a patient’s death.

• Grief Support

  Volunteers assist in the Center for Loss and Transition located on the second floor at our main office. Duties may include supporting grieving families through phone calls and preparing/mailing bereavement materials, etc.

• Home Improvement Crew

  Our volunteers have many talents, some of those include constructing wheel chair ramps, cutting grass, and general home maintenance.

• Library

  A generous collection of books, CDs, prayer tapes, and bible recordings are available for our patients and their families. Ask for a book of your choice to be read or a particular CD to be played.

• Mailing Crew

  This crew prepares, addresses, and mails flyers, letters, yearly appeals, etc.

• Mona's Munchies

  Delicious homemade cookies provided by our caring volunteers to brighten any day.

• Music Therapy

  Volunteers sing for patients or at pinning ceremonies. Some volunteers play musical instruments for patients.

• No One Dies Alone Program

  A 24-hour/7-days a week program providing companionship for those who have no family or caregiver at the end of life. This program speaks to the core of our mission in that every life is precious and a gift.

• Pet Therapy

  Another favorite of our patients and their families. For our animal lovers, a visit from our trained four-legged friends are a blessing.

• Prayer Angels

  Loving volunteers provide bedside prayers, rosaries, or Chaplets of Divine Mercy. This crew responds when patients are at the end of their journey and want heaven called down.

• Sewing Group

  Volunteers sew pillow cases used for Veteran ceremonies as well as hospital gowns and wheelchair bags from donated sheets. *Material and patterns provided

• Spiritual Companionship

  Providing spiritual companionship and guidance, these volunteers are trained to listen and provide solace and peace of spirit where possible.

• We Honor Veterans Program

  We are proud to be a Level-5 Certified Partner in the National "We Honor Veterans" Program. Pinning ceremonies are provided to honor those who have selflessly served us and our country. Active Military Personnel, Veterans, and Reservists are typically chosen first as veteran patients enjoy the camaraderie.
