After battling cancer for four years, Richard was admitted to the hospital the last month of his life because he needed continuous pain management. With no other treatment options available, he wanted to live out his final days at home - yet he required 24-hour care. The hospice house will be the perfect option to many who find themselves in a similar situation.
With only a few weeks left to live, Ms. Sylvia was two months behind on her rent and about to be evicted. Although Hospice of Acadiana prevented that from happening, the hospice house will be a safe haven for those who, like Ms. Sylvia, find themselves alone on their end-of-life journey.
When Robert, a homeless veteran, was accepted onto our services, he was adamant about not going to a nursing home. Arrangements were made for a private room at the shelter to provide the care that he needed. But given all that Robert had done for our country, it would have been nice to bring him to the hospice house to spend his final days.
Gerald’s granddaughter announced she would be graduating from college, and the family all wanted to be there. With Alzheimer’s, Gerald was on hospice home care, but was not well enough to make the trip. There wasn’t anyone to leave him with. As part of respite care, Gerald could stay at the hospice house for 5 days, and return to home hospice care when they returned.
Those receiving care at home whose condition requires more than can be provided in the home environment
Terminally ill patients unable to or unlikely to leave the hospital due to disease or symptom progression
Patients who do not have the family or caregivers needed for in-home hospice care
Those lacking the financial means necessary for end-of-life care and support
Sheltered homeless individuals who do not have suitable accomodations for care
We have an incredible opportunity and responsibility to foster and support a loving environment for each person's final moments on this earth. It is a privilege for us to serve the patients and families who entrust us with their care. And, we could not do it without the help and generosity of our community. Help us provide those in need the safe, peaceful, comforting passage from this life that we all deserve.
"It is obvious that man is himself a traveler; that the purpose of this world is not 'to have and to hold' but 'to give and to serve'. There can be no greater meaning." — SIR WILFRED GRENFELL
All gifts of $5,000 or more will be recognized on the Memorial Wall in the hospice house.
